The Age of the Beast

Woolgathering_fly_blog_6It is the age of the beast. The indie beast.

The Filipino commercial movie industry is in it’s last throes. Good riddance.  The worms are coming out of the woodwork with their tales of violence and drugs and sex and all the nasty things the commercial industry can’t seriously talk about except through cliches and stereotypes. These independent movies are often dark, angry, and deliciously masturbatory in nature. Artists finally unfettered by the necessity of earning a buck. They’re finding a living somewhere else (in TV, most likely) and making mental jizz as an escape. And they’re filling the vacuum the mainstream is making as it whithers away.

Fear for your children’s morality, you tired, old bastards.

Of course, it’s not all Cannes material. Most of it is shit. Any dumb bloke with a digital video camera and enough artistic pretension can make an indie movie. But just like in an ukay-ukay thrift shop, within that sea of crap lies a true find. And the mere desire to make a movie without the usual compromises of mainstream cinema is a grand thing in itself. It’s the seed of revolution. Or of evolution. Angry movies by angry artists. The old rules are broken, the old ways are cast aside. Satan must be shitting himself excitedly now.

Join the revolution, ladies and gentlemen. Cthullu is coming.
